Before you start
Who it's for and what to know first
Addition, subtraction, times tables and simple fractions.
- Look for key words: ‘altogether’ (add), ‘left’ (subtract), ‘each’ (multiply or divide), ‘half’ (divide by 2).
- Draw a quick bar model for fraction problems.
- Estimate before calculating.
Worked example 1
A witch has 40 sweets and gives away 3/4. How many does she give away?
- 40 ÷ 4 = 10.
- 10 × 3 = 30.
