Using pencil marks
When a square could hold two or three numbers, write them small in its corner. As you fill in other squares, cross candidates out. Often a square is reduced to one option without you noticing where the answer came from.
Look for pairs: if two squares in the same row can only be 3 or 7, then no other square in that row can be 3 or 7.

Go back to scanning number by number. Most medium puzzles can be finished without guessing, so if you feel you have to guess, there is usually a single-candidate square you have missed.
