Good to know
Ruled paper at the spacing you prefer
Eight millimetres gives comfortable everyday writing space. College rule is exactly 9/32 inch, or 7.14375 mm; wide rule is exactly 11/32 inch, or 8.73125 mm.
Turn on the vertical margin for annotation or page organisation. The PDF keeps the chosen spacing regardless of whether you view it in metric or imperial units.
Choosing ruled paper
Line spacing makes more difference than you would expect
Match the ruling to the writer
The distance between lines decides how large someone can comfortably write. Too narrow and letters get cramped; too wide and the page looks half empty. Choosing well is mostly about who is holding the pen.
- 10 mm: a relaxed spacing for children in early juniors, or anyone with larger handwriting.
- 8 mm: the standard UK exercise-book ruling, suitable from upper primary through to adults.
- Wide ruled (about 8.7 mm): the traditional US spacing for younger students.
- College ruled (about 7.1 mm): the US spacing most older students and adults prefer.
When to add a margin
A vertical margin on the left gives space for dates, question numbers, teacher marks or hole punching. Turn it on for school work and letters; leave it off for journals, lists or creative writing where you want the full width.
Uses beyond school
- Letters and thank-you notes when you want neat, level lines.
- Recipe cards and household notes printed on thicker card.
- Copying out poems, song lyrics or passages for practice.
- Spare pages for a ring binder when a notebook runs out.
Print it so the lines stay put
Choose the same paper size in your printer as in the generator, then print at 100%. If you want lines to show through when writing on the reverse, a slightly heavier line weight helps; for a subtle look, keep it fine and grey.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Most UK exercise books use 8 mm lines, often with a margin. Younger children are frequently given wider spacing such as 10 mm or dedicated handwriting paper.
They are US standards. Wide ruled is about 8.7 mm between lines and suits younger students; college ruled is about 7.1 mm and fits more lines on the page.
Yes. Use your printer's two-sided setting at Actual size. The lines are drawn in the same position on each page, so the fronts and backs line up closely on most printers.
