Counting coins worksheet: pence totals

Children add two to four British coins and write the total in pence, such as 20p + 10p + 5p = 35p. Every total stays under £1, so the focus is on recognising coin values and adding them accurately, starting with the largest coin. It suits children of about 6 to 8 who can already count in 2s, 5s and 10s.

What it practises

  • Recognising 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p coins by value
  • Adding amounts by counting on from the largest coin
  • Writing money using the p (pence) notation

How to use it

  1. Look at the coins in each question.
  2. Start with the biggest coin and count on the others.
  3. Type the total in pence, for example 35p, then press Check answers.
  4. Print the worksheet on A4 and use the answer sheet to mark it.

Example

50p + 20p + 2p: start at 50, count on 20 to make 70, then 2 more to make 72p.
