For parents and teachers

Using these Christmas maths worksheets

Choosing the right band

The sheets are grouped by key stage. KS1 (Years 1 and 2) uses numbers to 20 or a little beyond, the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, and money in whole pence and pounds. Lower KS2 (Years 3 and 4) works with three-digit numbers, tables to 12 × 12 and pounds and pence. Upper KS2 (Years 5 and 6) adds multi-step problems, decimals and percentages in a shopping context.

If a child finds their band too easy, try the next one up: the festive theme stays the same, so nobody feels they have been given ‘baby’ work.

What each sheet practises

  • Word problems: reading carefully, choosing the operation and showing a short line of working.
  • Festive times-tables grid: quick recall, with a mix of facts from the tables taught in that band.
  • Money and shopping: adding prices, working out change and, for older children, discounts.
  • Code-breaker: each answer gives a letter, and the letters spell a Christmas word, so children can tell straight away if a calculation has gone wrong.

Ideas for the last week of term

In class, the code-breakers work well as a starter while the register is taken, and the word problems as a paired task, with one child reading and the other calculating. At home, pick one sheet per day during the holidays and keep it short; ten minutes before a film is plenty. Print the answer key separately so an adult can mark it, or let older children check their own work and correct it in a different colour.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Every sheet and its answer key is free to print for home or classroom use, with no sign-up.

The code-breaker is a good first choice, because the hidden word tells children whether their answers are right.

They practise skills from the primary curriculum in England for each band, such as times tables and money, using a Christmas theme.
