How it works

Shift length: count on from the start time to the end time, then subtract unpaid breaks.

Convert minutes to decimal hours by dividing by 60: 30 min = 0.5 h, 15 min = 0.25 h, 45 min = 0.75 h.

Pay = hours × hourly rate. Overtime at 'time and a half' is 1.5 × the normal rate.

Worked example 1

A shift runs 08:30–17:00 with a 30-minute unpaid break. Paid hours?

  1. 08:30 to 17:00 = 8 h 30 min
  2. Minus 30 min break = 8 h

Answer: 8 hours

Worked example 2

7.5 hours at £12.40 per hour?

  1. 7 × £12.40 = £86.80
  2. 0.5 × £12.40 = £6.20
  3. Total £93.00

Answer: £93.00
