Counting
Counting is more than reciting numbers. Children need to touch or point to each object once, understand that the last number said is the total, and realise that arranging objects differently does not change how many there are.
Dot sheets are useful because the dots cannot be moved. Encourage children to tick or cross off each dot as they count, which builds the habit of keeping track.
Counting
Start with the easy setting (up to 5 in Reception, up to 10 in Year 1). Move on when a child counts accurately without rushing. The hard setting mixes in 'what comes next?' questions to link counting objects with the number sequence.
