Subtraction

Taking away and finding the difference

Subtraction has two meanings: taking away from a group, and finding the difference between two numbers. Children who understand both can choose whether to count back or count on.

Year 1 sheets stay within 20. Year 2 works within 100, and Years 3 and 4 move to three- and four-digit subtraction where exchanging is often needed.

Subtraction

Checking with the inverse

Encourage children to check a subtraction by adding the answer back: if 83 − 27 = 56, then 56 + 27 should make 83. This habit catches most mistakes.
