What Year 1 practice looks like
In Year 1 children move from counting objects towards knowing number facts. They learn to read and write numbers to 100, recall pairs that make 10 and use addition and subtraction symbols with confidence.
Reading grows quickly through phonics. Many schools check phonic decoding towards the end of the year, so short, regular practice with real and nonsense words is useful. Writing moves from captions to sentences with capital letters and full stops.
