Per cent means per hundred

Percentages are introduced in Year 5 as parts per hundred. Children learn that 50% is a half, 25% a quarter and 10% a tenth, and use those facts to find other percentages.

To find 35% of 240, find 10% (24), multiply by 3 (72), find 5% (12) and add: 84.
