Spelling

Patterns before memorising

Good spellers look for patterns. Year 1 adds -s, -ing and -ed. Year 2 adds suffixes such as -ful, -less and -ment. Years 3 and 4 learn prefixes like un-, dis- and re- and endings such as -tion. Years 5 and 6 tackle -cious, -tial, silent letters and -ance/-ence.

Alongside patterns, each stage has words that simply need learning. Schools in England use statutory word lists for Years 3/4 and 5/6.

Spelling

Look, say, cover, write, check

This classic routine still works: look at the word, say it, cover it, write it from memory and check. Repeat any mistakes the next day.
