Story starters — answers
Suggested answers. Accept sensible alternatives where noted.
1.Write a sentence about your favourite animal.Model: My favourite animal is the otter because it plays in the river. Look for a capital letter, a full stop and a reason.
2.Describe a place you love using three adjectives.Model: The quiet, sandy, sunny beach near Gran's house. Accept any three describing words that fit the place.
3.Begin a story: The door at the end of the garden was open…Model: …and a cold, silver light spilled across the grass. Look for a clear next event, a setting detail and correct punctuation.
4.Write instructions for making a sandwich.Guidance: a title, a list of things you need, numbered steps and bossy verbs (take, spread, cut). Steps should be in a sensible order.
5.Write a letter to a character from a book you enjoyed.Guidance: 'Dear…' greeting, a question or comment about the story, a closing ('From…') and your name. Accept any sensible content.
6.Plan a story: character, setting, problem, solution.Model: Character — Sam, a nervous knight. Setting — a misty castle. Problem — a dragon has taken the keys. Solution — Sam shares his lunch and the dragon returns them.
Reception writes names, labels and captions. Year 1 writes sentences, Year 2 short narratives and recounts, and Key Stage 2 plans, drafts and improves longer pieces organised into paragraphs.
